The findings are indicative of a biodiversity that once existed in the said region.

According to geologist Arya, these findings have the potential to redefine our understanding of the region’s past. Ladakh, famous for its high-altitude desert landscapes, might have been a different geological entity, one that was home to vibrant marine life, coral reefs and beaches.

According to Arya, the geological history of Burtse offers a remarkable parallel to the beaches of Rameshwaram or Andaman Nicobar today. Earlier in August, the Geologist had discovered well-preserved fossils of marine animals at an altitude of 16,000 feet above sea level further in Ladakh, augmenting the idea that Himalayas were born as continental plates thrust out of Tethys Sea about 40 million years ago.

Coral reef, an underwater ecosystem comprising of colonies of corals, held together by a building of calcium carbonate. These reefs are considered extremely important for healthy marine ecology. One of the rarest and exquisite ecosystems on Earth, it is a source of food and shelter for about 25% of all marine species.

The corals also contribute to the fishing industry, protect the beaches and coastlines from erosion, act as ocean’s filter, and provides life-saving medicines.

U.S. President Joe Biden also discussed aid for Gaza with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi by phone late on Wednesday, while flying home from a less than eight-hour visit to Israel.

President Biden told reporters that Sisi agreed to open the Rafah crossing from Egypt to Gaza to allow about 20 trucks carrying humanitarian aid into the enclave, where people are desperately short of food, water, fuel and other essentials after Israel unleashed a blockade and air strikes 12 days ago.

President Biden did not give a timeline for the opening, but U.S. national security spokesperson John Kirby said it would occur in coming days following repairs to the road.

Amid fears the conflict could spread beyond Gaza, Biden had planned to meet Arab leaders. But Jordan called off his planned summit there with Egypt and the Palestinian Authority after the hospital blast.

BI News, Agencies: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said on Wednesday that Egyptians in their millions would reject the forced displacement of Palestinians into Sinai, adding that any such move would turn the Egyptian peninsula into a base for attacks against Israel.

Later, following a phone call between Sisi and U.S. President Joe Biden, a White House spokesman said about 20 trucks carrying humanitarian aid would enter Gaza from Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula in the coming days.

White House spokesman John Kirby said the road needed some repairs first, and that he hoped more trucks would follow. The Egyptian presidency said it was agreed that aid should be provided in a “sustainable manner”.

Egypt has been trying to channel humanitarian relief to Gaza through the Rafah crossing, but aid has been piling up on the Egyptian side after Israeli bombardments made the crossing inoperable.

Egypt has been alarmed at the idea that Israel’s unprecedented bombardment and siege of Gaza, home to 2.3 million people, could force its residents southwards into Sinai.

The Gaza Strip is effectively under Israeli control and Palestinians could instead be moved to Israel’s Negev desert “till the militants are dealt with”, Sisi told a joint press conference in Cairo with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

The border between Sinai and the Gaza Strip has the only crossing from the Palestinian territory that is not controlled by Israel.

“What is happening now in Gaza is an attempt to force civilian residents to take refugee and migrate to Egypt, which should not be accepted,” said Sisi.

Referring to the Egyptian position at a Beirut press conference, Hamas official Osama Hamdan called “for rallying around this position and supporting it on the popular and Arab official level because this represents real protection for our Palestinian people.”

“India Achieves Record-High Food Grain Production in 2022-23”

BI News, India: Last year’s good monsoon rains helped, output of both Food grain and horticulture production hit a record high in the July 2022 to June 2023 crop year, With an estimated production of 330 million tons and 352 million tons, respectively.

While foodgrain production in 2022-23 recorded an increase of 14 million tons (over 4%) over 2021-22 as per the agriculture ministry, the output of horticultural produce showed an increase of about 5 million tons (over 1%) compared to the previous year.

The  Agriculture Ministry released both Food grain and horticulture production estimates on October 18.

The Ministry said that final estimates for food grain output in 2022-23 stood at a record 329.68 million tons, up 4% or 14.1 million tons higher than a year ago.

In the foodgrain basket, paddy (rice) and wheat reported record production in the 2022-23 crop year (July-June cycle) at 135 million tons and 110 million tons, respectively.

As per this, the total production of rice in 2022-23 is estimated at a record 135.75 million tons, up by 6.28 million tons from the previous year’s output.

Fruit & vegetable production

Fruit production stood at 108 million tons in 2022-23 compared to 107 million tons in 2021-22 whereas the production of vegetables stood at 213 million tons in 2022-23 compared to 209 million tons in the previous year. potato output was 60 million tons compared to 56 million tons in 2021-22.

Rice Production

Rice output is also 15.36 million tons more than the last five years’ average production of 120.39 million tons.

Wheat production

Production of wheat during 2022-23 is estimated at a record 110.55 million tons. It is 2.8 million tons more than the previous year’s wheat production. It is also an improvement of 4.8 million tons compared to the average wheat production of 105.73 million tons.

Pulses production

Total pulses production during 2022-23 is estimated at 26 million tons which is higher by 1.4 million tons compared to the last five years’ average pulses production of 24.6 million tons.

Oilseed production

Production of oilseed in the country during 2022-23 is estimated at a record 41.35 million tons, up by 3.39 million tons compared to the previous year’s output.

The horticulture production estimates that the output of fruits, vegetables, plantation crops, flowers and honey is also expected to have increased over the year. Fruit production is estimated to have touched 108.34 million tons in the year 2022-23 as compared to 107.51 million tons in the year 2021-22.

Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh credits the record output of foodgrain and horticultural crops to the hard work of farmers, the efficiency of scientists and the farmer-friendly government policies.

Shantanu Thakur, Minister of State for Ports, Shipping & Waterways, presided over sessions on the latest trends in shipping and maritime logistics, and Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways, discussed developing inland waterways as part of multimodal economic corridors.

The Global Maritime India Summit 2023 has clearly set the stage for substantial investment and sustainable development in the maritime industry. In its inaugural session, GMIS 2023 laid the foundation for 21 projects and signed 34 MoUs worth ₹3.24 lakh crores, solidifying India’s commitment to sustainable and green projects. The event witnessed the launch of “Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047” by PM Modi, a roadmap for the maritime sector’s development over the next 25 years, aiming to make India self-reliant by 2047.
