“After a 25-Year Gap, Endangered Gangetic Dolphin Sighted in Assam’s Charikadiya River”

0

BI News, India: The endangered aquatic mammal, the Gangetic Dolphin (Platanista gangetica), has been spotted in the Charikadiya River in Dhakuakhana in Lakhimpur district of Assam. The was reported by Dhruba Jyoti Chetia and Rajib Baruah of Pu N Fu Wild, a wildlife protection group based in Dhakuakhana.

Locally known as Sihu, the sighting of the mammal holds great significance. Gangetic Dolphin was last spotted in the Charikadiya river 25 years ago, with the last documented sighting dating back to 1998. The prolonged absence of this species raised concerns about its dwindling population and near-extinction status.

Hunting, reduction in primary food sources and several other reasons are attributed as probable reasons of the decline of gangetic dolphins in Charikadiya river.

The discovery was made during a routine bird-watching expedition at Bolaighat, Dhakuakhana, led by Dhruba Jyoti Chetia and Rajib Baruah.

According to Wildlife Institute of India, gangetic dolphins were historically distributed in major river systems (Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna and Karnaphuli-Sangu) of India, Nepal and Bangladesh. Currently, the species is restricted to disjunct stretches in India’s Ganga-Brahmaputra-Barak river system, Nepal’s Karnali, Sapta Koshi and Narayani river systems, and Bangladesh’s Meghna, Karnaphuli and Sangu river systems.

A long thin snout, rounded belly, stocky body and large flippers are characteristics of the Ganges river dolphin. The species has a slit similar to a blowhole on top of its head, which acts as a nostril. The Ganges river dolphins can only live in freshwater and are essentially blind. They hunt by emitting ultrasonic sounds waves that bounce off of fish and other prey.

Major threats that the species face are unintentional killing through entanglement in fishing gear; poaching for dolphin oil, used as fish attractant and for medicinal purposes; habitat destruction due to development projects (e.g. water extraction and the construction of barrages, high dams and embankments), pollution among several others.

“Putin Advocates Dialogue in Conversations with Israeli, Arab, and Iranian Leaders”

BI News, India: Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the deaths of more than 1,300 Israelis in a wave of attacks launched from Gaza on Oct.7 by Islamist militant group Hamas.

He also told Netanyahu about “the steps Russia is taking to help normalize the situation, prevent further escalation of violence and prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip”.

Putin told Netanyahu on Monday that Moscow wanted to help prevent a humanitarian disaster in Gaza as he waded into the Middle East crisis with a flurry of calls to key regional players.

The Kremlin said Putin expressed Russia’s willingness to work towards “ending the Palestinian-Israeli confrontation and achieving a peaceful settlement through political and diplomatic means”

While a Russian-drafted U.N. Security Council resolution that called for a humanitarian ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Palestinian militants Hamas in Gaza failed to pass on Monday (October 16), while a vote on a rival Brazilian text was delayed until Tuesday (October 17).

The draft resolution received five votes in favor and four votes against, along with six abstentions. A resolution needs at least nine votes in favor and no vetoes by the five permanent members – the United States, Russia, China, France and Britain – to pass.

Russia proposed the one-page draft text on October 13, which also called for the release of hostages, humanitarian aid access, and the safe evacuation of civilians in need. The text condemned violence against civilians and all acts of terrorism, but did not name Hamas, which killed 1,300 people in Israel on Oct. 7.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad also held a telephone conversation during which they discussed the crisis in the Gaza Strip, Russia’s TASS news agency quoted the Syrian leader’s office as saying on Monday.

Both Putin and Assad favoured the immediate delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, it quoted Assad’s office as saying.

“Rahul Gandhi’s Critique of RSS in Mizoram”

0

BI News, Mizoram : Congress leader Rahul Gandhi delivered a scathing critique of the RSS and BJP, asserting that the divisive ideology propagated by the RSS poses a direct threat to the unity of India. Speaking at a public gathering in Lunglei, Mizoram, he expressed concerns, stating that individuals are increasingly hesitant to openly use their native languages and practice their religions, which he argued runs counter to the essence of India. Rahul Gandhi emphasized that the impact of the RSS ideology is evident throughout the country. He stressed that, in the view of his party, each state contributes to India’s rich tapestry with its distinct culture, traditions, and religious customs, serving as the very foundation of the Indian identity.

In his perspective, preserving these cultural diversities is paramount.Gandhi further underscored that their vision of India does not align with a scenario where individuals are fearful to practice their faith, speak their languages, or uphold their traditions. Such an India, he asserted, does not align with their vision for the nation. As an example, he referred to the ongoing developments in Manipur, which, in his opinion, stand as a compelling illustration of the potential consequences of the BJP’s ideology. Notably, he pointed out that the Prime Minister has not visited Manipur despite the significant events unfolding in the region.

Modi Envisions India’s Space Odyssey: Moon Landing by 2040, Space Station by 2035″

BI News, New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday asked scientists to aim to send the first Indian to the Moon by 2040 and set up an Indian space station by 2035, according to an official statement.
He gave these directions during a meeting to review the preparedness of the Gaganyaan mission and the first demonstration flight of the crew escape system test vehicle scheduled for October 21.
“The meeting evaluated the mission’s readiness, affirming its launch in 2025,” the statement said. During the meeting, the prime minister outlined the future of India’s space exploration endeavours and urged scientists to work towards interplanetary missions, including a Venus Orbiter Mission and a Mars Lander.
“Building on the success of Indian space initiatives, including the recent Chandrayaan-3 and Aditya L1 missions, the prime minister directed that India should now aim for new and ambitious goals, including setting up ‘Bharatiya Antariksha Station’ (Indian space station) by 2035 and sending first Indian to the Moon by 2040,” the statement said.
To realize this vision, the Department of Space will develop a roadmap for Moon exploration, it said.

“This will encompass a series of Chandrayaan missions, the development of a Next Generation Launch Vehicle (NGLV), construction of a new launch pad, setting up human-centric Laboratories and associated technologies,” the statement said.
The Department of Space presented a comprehensive overview of the Gaganyaan Mission, including various technologies developed so far such as human-rated launch vehicles and system qualification.
It was noted that around 20 major tests, including three uncrewed missions of the Human Rated Launch Vehicle (HLVM3) are planned.
Prime Minister Modi expressed confidence in India’s capabilities and affirmed the nation’s commitment to scaling new heights in space exploration.

“Biden’s Israel Visit Today Amid Escalating Gaza Crisis”

0

BI News, Agencies : Amid Tel Aviv-Hamas conflict spiraling into a broader regional conflagration, the US President Biden plans to visit Israel on Wednesday. Secretary of State Antony J Blinken announced this decision in Jerusalem, setting up a high-stakes trip in which the American leader will try to forestall a worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza while also preventing the war between Israel and Hamas from spreading. Biden’s visit underscores the U.S.’s commitment to Israel, with the administration pledging military assistance and seeking congressional approval for additional aid to both Israel and Ukraine. The announcement follows extensive talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other officials.
Biden will also visit Jordan, where he plans to meet with Jordanian King Abdullah II, Egyptian President Abdel Fatah El-Sisi and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to discuss the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which has endured Israeli airstrikes that have killed more than 2,700 Palestinians.

Hamas has taken scores of hostages into Gaza, including an unknown number of Americans. Biden will work to get as much information about the hostage situation as possible during his trip, White House spokesman John Kirby said in a briefing with reporters.
Kirby emphasized that the United States had not sought assurances that Israel would not launch its ground invasion while Biden was visiting the country. “We’re not dictating terms or operational directions to the Israelis,” Kirby said. “We don’t want to see escalation. We want to make sure humanitarian assistance begins to flow.”
Still, U.S. officials waited to announce Biden’s travel to Israel on Monday night until they received commitments from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on a humanitarian package, according to two US officials familiar with the discussions. Secretary of State Antony Blinken received assurances during a marathon meeting in Tel Aviv this week and then made the announcement that Biden would be visiting.

During the 7½-hour meeting, Israeli and U.S. officials set up separate rooms and passed papers between the two sides, negotiating over humanitarian issues including getting aid into Gaza and creating safe zones for Palestinian civilians, said a State Department official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe sensitive discussions.
Though Blinken hailed an agreement on humanitarian issues, his announcement included few details, probably an indication that differences remain between the two allies. The provision of humanitarian aid is sensitive in Israel, especially among far-right politicians tied to Netanyahu who have pressed him to wage a scorched-earth campaign in Gaza in response to the terrorist attack.
The White House is deeply concerned about the conflict spiraling into a broader regional conflagration, and Biden has warned other actors, particularly Iran, not to jump in. His visit to Israel could underline that message.

Officials are also worried that anger in Arab countries, where many citizens have deep sympathy for the Palestinian cause, could boil over and create pressure for their leaders to take action against Israel.
Biden spoke with Sisi on Monday, the White House said, and the two discussed “ongoing efforts to alleviate the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, in coordination with the U.N., Jordan, the Palestinian Authority, Israel, and other regional partners.”

“Lok Sabha Speaker Refers Mahua Moitra’s Complaint to Ethics Panel”

0

BI News, New Delhi : Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has referred BJP MP Nishikant Dubey’s “bribe-for-query” complaint against Trinamool Congress member Mahua Moitra to the Ethics Committee of the lower House.
Dubey has accused Moitra of taking “bribes” from a businessman to ask questions in Parliament and urged Birla to constitute an “inquiry committee” to look into the charges against her.
Moitra has hit back, saying she “welcomes any move against her after the Lok Sabha Speaker is finished dealing with pending charges against him (Dubey)”.

The Ethics Committee of the Lok Sabha is chaired by BJP member Vinod Kumar Sonkar.
On Sunday, Dubey wrote to Birla under the subject “Re-emergence of nasty ‘Cash for Query’ in Parliament, Direct involvement of Smt. Mahua Moitra, Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) for serious ‘Breach of Privilege’, ‘Contempt of the House’ and a ‘Criminal Offence’ under Section 120-A of IPC”.
Citing a letter he has received from advocate Jai Anant Dehadrai, , Dubey said the lawyer had “shared irrefutable evidence of bribes exchanged” between Moitra and Darshan Hiranandani”. The Hiranandani Group has denied the allegations.
In his letter to the speaker, Dubey said 50 of 61 questions she asked in Lok Sabha till recently were focused on the Adani Group, the business conglomerate which the TMC MP has often accused of malpractices, more so after it was at the receiving end of a critical report of short-selling from Hindenburg. The Hiranandani Group had lost energy and infra contracts to the Adani Group and Moitra’s questions were directed at perpetuating the business interests of the former, Dubey indicated in his letter.
Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar called the allegations “shocking”. Dubey had also written to Chandrasekhar and Union IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw demanding an inquiry committee. Chandrasekhar said that the alleged sharing of Moitra’s Lok Sabha credentials with an external entity “poses a direct threat to national security.”
